Basic Principles in Maxillofacial Trauma

This course is designed to provide attendees with the knowledge and skills to assess and manage maxillofacial trauma, in line with the curriculum objectives for maxillofacial surgery training.
It includes lectures which describe the clinical assessment, imaging and treatment planning of fractures of the facial skeleton and
workshops allowing attendees to practice the skills required for intermaxillary fixation and internal fixation of the facial bones.
At the end of the course participants should be able to
- Examine patients with facial injuries and choose appropriate investigations
- Diagnose and formulate a treatment plan for immediate and ongoing management
- Understand the principles for facial fracture fixation, including choice of materials
- Be aware of suitable options for surgical access
- Apply intermaxillary fixation and appropriate internal fixation to fractures
