Basic Principles in Maxillofacial Trauma

@ Innovations in Oral- and Maxillofacial Surgery Congress

This course is designed to provide attendees with the knowledge and skills to assess and manage maxillofacial trauma, in line with the curriculum objectives for maxillofacial surgery training.

It includes lectures which describe the clinical assessment, imaging and treatment planning of fractures of the facial skeleton and
workshops allowing attendees to practice the skills required for intermaxillary fixation and internal fixation of the facial bones.

At the end of the course participants should be able to

  • Examine patients with facial injuries and choose appropriate investigations
  • Diagnose and formulate a treatment plan for immediate and ongoing management
  • Understand the principles for facial fracture fixation, including choice of materials
  • Be aware of suitable options for surgical access
  • Apply intermaxillary fixation and appropriate internal fixation to fractures

  • Opening, welcome and introduction
  • Immediate management of trauma patients. Initial clinical assessment of maxillofacial trauma (Borowiec)
  • Bone healing and general principles of fixation. Materials: titanium and resorbables (van Minnen)
  • Intermaxillary fixation (Borowiec)

Part 2 | 10:15 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

  • IMF workshop
  • Management of simple mandibular fractures (van Minnen)
  • Management of complex mandibular fractures (Essig)
  • Management of condylar fractures (Gabryelczak)

Lunch | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m.

Part 3 | 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.

  • Workshop – fixation of simple, comminuted mandibular fractures, and condyle fractures
  • Management of maxillary fractures (Tyndorf)
  • Management of zygoma fractures (van Minnen)
  • Management of orbital fractures (Essig)

Part 4 | 3:15 - 5:00 p.m.

  • Workshop – fixation of midface fractures
  • Management of naso-ethmoid and frontal fractures (van Minnen)
  • Management of pediatric fractures (Dowgierd)
  • Closing remarks

Cancellation by course organizer

  • the course organizer reserves the right to cancel an event due to low enrollment or other circumstances which would make the course non-viable.
  • if the organizer cancels a course, registrants will be offered a full refund of registration fees. The organizer will not reimburse other costs incurred with the course (travel or hotel bookings by participants not made by the organizer).
  • should circumstances arise that result in postponement of a course, the organizer has the right to either issue a full refund or transfer registration to the same event at the new, future date.

Registration cancellation by participant:

  • The deadline to receive a refund for your registration is 21 business days before the course.
  • Registration cancellations received prior to the deadline may be eligible to receive a refund less a service fee of € 100.-.
  • Cancellations received after the stated deadline will not be eligible for a refund.
  • Refunds will not be available for registrants who choose not to attend the course.
  • Cancellations will be accepted in writing only and must be received by the stated cancellation deadline. When writing your cancellation please include the details of your credit card or bank details (BIC).
